Jackson Square
Location: Seattle, WA
This is a remodel in Pioneer Square. The design includes seven apartments over a ground floor retail space, which at the time was to become the Mack Gallery. All seven units have an individual floor plan that relates to the outlook they have and their location within the building. Five of the units have their own roof gardens, wooden decking and outer walls of exposed brick. The views are exciting for their vitality and animation, the high energy of professional sports just down the street to the South and the open plazas of Occidental Mall up the street to the North, all against the backdrop of Seattle’s changing skyline. The Jackson Square apartments have soft, neutral colors in carpet and wall coverings warmed by clear wood moldings and walls with original brick exposed wherever possible. Structural beams and joinings were also exposed and made integral parts of the interior schemes. A small two-story section was added to the back of the building to house a second stairwell and a garden room extension for one of the units without a roof garden. The Jackson Square project offered another opportunity to bring an interesting and worthy older building back to life. But to the owners, the occupants and the Pioneer Square comminity, this successful combination of retail and upscale residential space represented the boldest concept of inner-city living. |
