Port Hadlock Public Access Location: Port Hadlock, Washington
This integrated public access project proposed beach restoration, over-water dock construction with public access, an off-shore mooring field for visiting sailors, and an interpretative trail connecting upper Port Hadlock with its historic waterfront. Craig Architects developed this concept in collaboration with the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, owners of the two historic buildings adjacent to the waterfront. Design details & innovations include a gluelam beam float that can accommodate 600 ton vessels in an 80 mile an hour wind (a recurring event in the Pacific Northwest), a float cut-out that allows for easy egress & pump-out, wide-spaced concrete pilings, plenty of backside, and an arched wooden ramp rail that reflects the history and vernacular of wooden boatbuilding traditions. This project demonstrates Craig Architects’ knowledge of maritime culture, and the firm’s strong commitment to restoring natural systems in service to a community’s health. |
